Lectio Divina
Lectio Divina is the spiritual practice of quietly reading a small portion of scripture aloud three times allowing for silently reflection between each reading. Lectio Divina places God’s Word in our mouths as we read, in our ears as we hear, and in our heart as we meditate and contemplate. The movements are simple. A short passage of scripture is chosen and slowly read aloud. After the first reading we listen for a word or phrase that stands out to us. After the second reading we take time to reflect on the meaning of our word or phrase. After the third reading we respond to God and then receive His word for us. This practice creates space to rest in God’s loving presence. Lectio Divina can be practiced alone or with a small group of people choosing to listen together.
The Movements:
First Reading: Listen for a word or phrase that stands out to you.
Second Reading: Meditate on your word or phrase. Are there any thoughts, images, or feelings that arise?
Third Reading: Respond with a prayer to God. Tell God about anything that is stirring within you. What is your response to the word or phrase you have heard?
Contemplate: Rest in God’s love. Open your heart to receive. Allow your word or phrase to sink deeply into your soul. What is God’s invitation to you today?
Getting Started
Begin by practicing for one week with the following passages from the Gospels and Psalms. Once you understand the flow of Lectio Divina any short passage can be used. This spiritual practice can help you settle into a devotional routine. Perhaps you can begin in the morning when you first wake up, at the end of the day before bed, or when you find a few spare moments throughout your day. It is also helpful to write down any thoughts, feelings, and insights you receive in a journal so that you can savor God’s invitation to you and presence with you from day to day.
